Bellingham Medical Massage and HSA Cards: How to Use Pre-Tax Dollars for Recovery
At Prime Sports Institute, we accept HSA and FSA cards for massage therapy, so your recovery can run on pre-tax dollars instead of your regular paycheck. If a nagging shoulder, a stiff neck, or a lingering training injury has been on your list for months, the money already sitting in your health account may be the nudge you need.
This guide breaks down how health accounts work for Bellingham massage, what makes a session treatment-focused, and the simple steps to pay with your card at our downtown clinic. We also cover your options if you don't have an HSA at all.
Why Pre-Tax Dollars Make Sense for Bellingham Massage Therapy
A Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) lets you set aside money before taxes for qualified medical expenses. Spending those funds on care you already need stretches every recovery dollar further.
The key word is "qualified." The IRS defines medical expenses as costs for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, and says the care must be mainly to relieve or prevent a physical or mental condition. Expenses that only benefit general health don't make the cut. You can read the full definition in IRS Publication 502.
That distinction matters. Bellingham massage therapy aimed at injury recovery or a specific complaint fits the purpose these accounts were built for. A purely relaxation-focused visit may not. Your plan administrator makes the final call, so always confirm with them first.
HSA vs. FSA: The Quick Difference
HSA funds generally stay in your account from year to year.
FSA funds often follow a use-it-or-lose-it rule at the end of the plan year, though some plans offer a grace period or a small carryover.
If your FSA plan year ends December 31, fall is the right time to check your balance. Booking treatment now puts that money to work before it expires.

What Makes a Session Treatment-Focused at Prime
Prime is a sports medicine clinic in downtown Bellingham that provides athletic therapy to optimize performance, prevent injury, and enable recovery. That focus shapes every massage we deliver.
Before your session, our massage team reads through your health history. Your therapist performs a thorough assessment, checks your range of motion, and then provides treatment massage based on what they find. Afterward, you'll get a recommendation on when to follow up, if needed, plus stretches, foam rolling, or exercises to help your results last.
Our sessions help clients dealing with chronic pain, neck tension, back pain, shoulder issues, and injury recovery. For a closer look at this type of care, visit our Bellingham medical massage page. If ongoing pain is your main concern, our Bellingham therapeutic massage page explains that approach.

Choosing the Right Session Length for Your Recovery
Picking the right session length helps you get the most from each HSA or FSA dollar.
90-Minute Massage
This option is recommended for injuries and treatment massage. Your session may include orthopedic and musculoskeletal evaluation and measurements, which allows for more detailed work on your primary complaints and compensations. Your practitioner also takes extra time to recommend self-care strategies and build a more thorough recovery plan.
60-Minute Massage
A 60-minute session addresses both primary and secondary complaints. It also works well as a full-body massage experience.
30-Minute Massage
Need to get in quickly? A 30-minute appointment is a great choice for treating an acute injury.
We also offer 3-packs of 60-minute and 90-minute sessions so you can pre-pay and save. See our prices page for current rates and packages.
How to Use Your HSA or FSA Card at Prime
Paying with pre-tax dollars takes just a few steps.
Step 1: Check With Your Plan Administrator
Call the number on your card and confirm that massage therapy counts as a qualified expense under your plan. Ask whether they require supporting documentation, such as a letter of medical necessity from your doctor. Every plan sets its own rules.
Step 2: Book Your Session
Schedule online through our booking page and complete your patient forms ahead of time. That gives your therapist your health history before you arrive.
Step 3: Pay With Your Card
Prime accepts HSA and FSA cards through Square. Simply use your card at checkout, just like a regular debit card.
Step 4: Keep Your Records
Save your receipts. If your plan ever asks for proof of a qualified expense, you'll have everything ready.

Book Your Massage We accept HSA and FSA cards and provide SuperBills for out-of-network benefits. Prefer to book by phone? Call (360) 922-3120.No HSA? Use a SuperBill for Out-of-Network Benefits
Searching for massage Bellingham options that work with insurance? Here's how it works at Prime.
Massage therapy at Prime is self-pay, and we are an out-of-network provider. That means we don't bill insurance directly. However, we can provide a SuperBill for you to submit to your insurance company for out-of-network benefits.
Call your insurer and ask, "What are my out-of-network massage therapy benefits?" It's usually a quick call. Many plans reimburse all or part of a session, especially PPO plans rather than HMO plans. Reimbursement isn't guaranteed, so contact your provider first and request a bill at the time of service if this interests you.
We'll give you all the information you need to file for reimbursement. If you need physical therapy, those services are provided on site by Precision PT, which is paneled with insurance providers.
Pair Your Massage With Guided Recovery
Not all Bellingham massage places give you a full recovery team under one roof. At Prime, our practitioners work together for you, from massage and athletic training to physical therapy and strength coaching.
Our training room offers Guided Recovery Sessions with tools like Game Ready, NormaTec compression, hot and cold contrast tubs, cold laser, and a FAR infrared sauna. Our staff walks you through a customized recovery plan based on how you're feeling that day.
If you're chasing bigger Bellingham fitness goals, our coaches collaborate with our athletic therapists to build a plan that's right for you. Our Season Pass membership bundles a 60-minute massage each month, a 30-minute athletic training session each month, and unlimited recovery sessions. Ask our team which payment options apply to recovery services and memberships.
That same integrated approach is why the Harlem Globetrotters trusted Prime during their 100th Anniversary Tour. On their off day, 25 athletes and coaches received sports-focused massage therapy and pain relief massage to target fatigue, tight muscles, and travel strain.
