What to Expect from Your First Bellingham Massage Therapy Appointment
Prime Sports Institute makes your first Bellingham massage therapy appointment straightforward, comfortable, and worth every minute. If you've never booked a sports or treatment massage before, or if you're new to a results-focused clinic, knowing what to expect takes the guesswork out of showing up.
Here's exactly what happens when you walk through our doors at 1704 N. State St. in downtown Bellingham.
Before You Arrive
Complete Your Patient Forms
Before your appointment, you'll fill out patient forms. These help your Bellingham massage therapist understand your health history, current complaints, and recovery goals before you even sit down together. You can find the forms at primebellingham.com/forms.
Coming in prepared saves time and helps your practitioner hit the ground running. The more specific you are about what's bothering you, the better they can customize your session.
Know What You're Coming In For
Think through your primary goal ahead of time. Are you dealing with a specific injury? Chronic neck or back tension? Shoulder pain that limits your training? Or are you simply ready to invest in recovery and maintenance?
The clearer you are, the more targeted your session will be. Our practitioners customize every appointment to meet your individual needs, so your input matters from the start.

When You Arrive
Prime Sports Institute is conveniently located in downtown Bellingham. Clinic hours run Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, with weekend appointments available by arrangement.
When you check in, a member of our team will get you settled and connect you with your practitioner. Expect a welcoming, professional environment focused on your health outcomes, not a spa atmosphere designed for ambiance alone.
The Intake Conversation
Your session starts with a conversation, not the table. Your Bellingham massage therapist will review your forms and ask follow-up questions to understand your complaints, goals, and any areas to avoid or focus on.
This intake process is a cornerstone of the Prime approach. Our team takes a holistic view of your overall comfort and nervous system, and that view starts with listening. You won't be rushed to the table before your practitioner understands what's going on in your body.
If you're coming in for treatment massage or Bellingham medical massage, expect this conversation to go deeper. As Kerry Gustafson, one of Prime's massage practitioners, explains: treatment massage and medical massage are not a traditional spa massage. The goal is to get to the root of the problem, not just provide temporary relief.
Your Session
What Happens on the Table
Once your intake is complete, your session begins. What your practitioner does depends entirely on your goals and what they learned during your intake.
At Prime, our licensed massage therapists are trained in a wide range of techniques. Depending on your session, you may experience:
Myofascial release, targeting the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue
Swedish massage, using flowing strokes to ease tension and support the nervous system
Deep tissue work, addressing chronic or acute muscle problems
Trigger point therapy or neuromuscular techniques, targeting specific areas of referred pain
Pin and Stretch or Muscle Energy Techniques, used to restore mobility and reduce pain
Cupping, to increase circulation and release fascial tension
Hot stone massage, using soothing stones to warm and loosen tight muscles
Intraoral massage (with Amanda Cook), for clients dealing with headaches, jaw tension, or migraines
Your practitioner won't apply a one-size-fits-all routine. They draw from their specific training and adapt in real time based on how your body responds.
What "Good Pressure" Actually Means
Massage therapy, especially sports or treatment work, isn't always purely comfortable in the moment. Myofascial release and deep tissue techniques address issues below the surface, and that can feel intense. Your practitioner will communicate throughout the session and adjust based on your feedback.
The goal is always purposeful pressure, not unnecessary pain. Clear communication goes both ways: your team wants to hear from you if something feels off, too light, or too intense.
Session Lengths at Prime
The length of your session shapes what your practitioner can accomplish.
90 minutes is the recommended choice for first-time clients with multiple complaints or complex issues. Your session may include orthopedic and musculoskeletal evaluation and measurements, allowing for more detailed techniques to address your primary complaints and compensations. Your practitioner will also take extra time after to recommend self-care strategies and build a customized recovery plan.
60 minutes allows your practitioner to address both primary and secondary complaints, and works well for a full-body massage experience.
30 minutes is a strong option when you need fast, targeted relief for an acute issue that can't wait.

After Your Session
Self-Care Recommendations
Before you leave, your practitioner will share next steps. This might include stretches, movement recommendations, or guidance on when to book your next appointment. The 90-minute session builds in dedicated time for this conversation.
Recovery doesn't end when you walk out the door. Your practitioner's goal is to help you maintain the results of your session and make progress between visits.
What Results Feel Like
For treatment and Bellingham medical massage clients, results often build over time rather than appearing instantly. Kerry Gustafson describes the aim as leaving clients with results they'll continue to feel over the next several days.
For sports massage clients focused on performance, you may notice improved range of motion, reduced soreness, and faster recovery from training. Kristina Zographos, who has been practicing massage since 2012, describes the goal as helping clients walk out of their massage appointment feeling better than when they walked in, whether through improved range of motion, reduced pain and muscle stiffness, decreased stress levels, or a quicker bounce-back after a tough training session.
Practical Details Worth Knowing
Payment and Insurance: Massage therapy at Prime is self-pay. Prime accepts HSA cards and can provide a SuperBill for clients who want to submit for out-of-network insurance reimbursement. Note that this does not guarantee reimbursement, and Prime recommends contacting your insurance provider ahead of time if this is relevant to you.
Your Therapist Options: Prime's team includes Seth Lee (B.S. in Exercise and Sports Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), Thom Mooney (graduate of Whatcom Community College's Massage Therapy program), Amanda Cook (WCC Massage Therapy Program graduate, certified in intraoral massage), Kristina Zographos (practicing since 2012), and Kerry Gustafson (specializing in treatment and medical massage). You can request a specific practitioner when booking.
According to the Mayo Clinic, massage therapy can be effective for stress reduction, pain management, and muscle recovery. At Prime, those outcomes aren't incidental; they're the point of every appointment.
