Dual-Licensed Bellingham Massage Therapist: Why Athletic Training Credentials Matter

At Prime Sports Institute, some of our practitioners hold two credentials at once: Licensed Massage Therapist and Certified Athletic Trainer. That combination is rare among Bellingham massage places, and it changes what happens on the table. When your therapist also trains as a sports medicine specialist, your massage stops being a guessing game and starts working from a real understanding of how your body moves.

What "Dual-Licensed" Actually Means

A dual-licensed Bellingham massage therapist carries formal training in two fields that most people experience separately. On one side sits massage therapy, the hands-on work of releasing tight tissue and easing pain. On the other sits athletic training, a healthcare profession focused on how the body moves, breaks down, and recovers.

At Prime, our owner Kerry Gustafson is an Athletic Trainer and Licensed Massage Therapist with more than 20 years of experience across physical therapy, high school, Division I, and Pac-12 college athletic settings. She is board certified in athletic training by the National Athletic Training Board of Certification. Michela Stratton is also dual-licensed as a Massage Therapist and Certified Athletic Trainer, with a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology and a treatment philosophy rooted in the belief that movement is medicine.

What an Athletic Trainer Brings to the Table

The athletic training credential is not a weekend certificate. It reflects training in an allied health care profession, and it shapes how a therapist reads your body.

Athletic Trainers Are Sports Medicine Specialists

At Prime, we describe an Athletic Trainer as a point guard for your healthcare. Our Athletic Trainers diagnose injuries, uncover imbalances to prevent injuries, prescribe exercises, and provide treatment. They also collaborate on your behalf with the other members of your Prime healthcare team, so your care connects instead of running in isolation.

That description lines up with the wider profession. The National Athletic Trainers' Association explains that athletic training covers the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions, and that athletic trainers are recognized as allied health care professionals. When that lens joins a massage practice, you get bodywork informed by clinical assessment.

Assessment That Guides the Massage

This training shows up directly in how we structure a session. Our 90-minute massage may include an orthopedic and musculoskeletal evaluation with measurements, which allows for more detailed techniques to address your primary complaints and compensations. After the hands-on work, your practitioner takes extra time to recommend self-care strategies and build a more thorough, customized plan for recovery. That evaluation-first approach comes straight from the athletic training playbook.

Why This Matters for Your Massage

You might wonder whether credentials change how a massage feels. They change what the massage accomplishes.

A therapist without a movement background can ease the muscle that hurts. A dual-licensed therapist looks for why that muscle keeps tightening. Athletic training teaches practitioners to spot imbalances and compensations, so instead of chasing symptoms week after week, they target the pattern driving your pain. This matters most when you are recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or trying to prevent the next setback.

It also matters for what comes next. Because our Athletic Trainers send you away with a clear plan, a massage at Prime does not end when the hour does. You leave knowing whether to progress your own exercises, keep booking treatment sessions, or transition to physical therapy, strength training, or another member of the team. For anyone serious about their Bellingham fitness and long-term movement, that continuity is the difference between temporary relief and lasting change.

Meet Prime's Dual-Licensed Bellingham Massage Therapists

Our team blends therapeutic skill with athletic expertise, and our two dual-licensed practitioners anchor that approach.

Kerry Gustafson

Kerry is the owner and founder of Prime Sports Institute. Before Prime, she served as the Athletic Trainer at Washington State University, where she focused on keeping varsity athletes healthy and rehabilitating them back to peak performance. She earned her BS in Kinesiology with a major in Athletic Training at Washington State University and her license in Massage Therapy from Whatcom Community College in Bellingham. Her goal in every session is to connect the dots to dysfunction in your body and return you to the sports and activities you love.

Michela Stratton

Michela brings both a Massage Therapist license and Certified Athletic Trainer credential to her work. Originally from Canada, she spent nearly a decade competing in varsity rugby while earning her Kinesiology degree, an experience that shaped her appreciation for how the body handles stress and recovery. She combines hands-on treatment, movement-based strategies, and education to help clients recover from injury, manage chronic pain, train for sport, or simply move and feel better.

One Team Under One Roof

The credential matters more because of the environment around it. Prime is a sports medicine clinic, and we have served the community as sports therapy, massage, and guided-recovery experts since 2018 from our location in downtown Bellingham. Our practitioners work together for you, all in one place.

That integration means your dual-licensed therapist is not working alone. Athletic Trainers at Prime can also perform Sports Screens, Baseline Concussion Testing, and post-concussion evaluations, and they know there are things we can do in the first 24 to 48 hours after an injury to speed the healing process. When your massage reveals something that needs another kind of care, the right professional is down the hall, not across town.

This is what makes Bellingham medical massage at Prime different. You get Bellingham therapeutic massage delivered by someone trained to think like a sports medicine provider, backed by a full team ready to support whatever your body needs next. Whether you drive in from Bellingham, Lynden, Lake Whatcom, Sudden Valley, or near Bellis Fair Mall, you reach a level of care built around results.

Insurance and Booking

Massage therapy and athletic training at Prime are self-pay, and we accept HSA cards. We can also provide a SuperBill you may submit to your insurance company for out-of-network benefits, though this does not guarantee reimbursement. If that interests you, contact your insurance provider and request a bill at the time of service.
