Bellingham Trigger Point Massage at Prime Sports Institute
Prime Sports Institute offers Bellingham trigger point massage from licensed massage therapists in downtown Bellingham, WA. If you have a knot that will not let go, or pain that seems to show up somewhere other than where the problem is, trigger point work is built for exactly that.
This page explains what trigger points are, what a session feels like, and which of our skilled therapists to book. For an overview of every massage we offer, start at our Bellingham massage page.
What Is a Trigger Point?
Trigger points are small, tight spots within a muscle, often described as knots. They form in areas of tight muscle fibers and can hold muscle tension long after the activity that caused them is over.
What makes them tricky is referred pain. A trigger point in one muscle can send pain to a different spot entirely, so a knot near your shoulder blade might show up as chronic neck tightness or a headache. That is why trigger point work focuses on finding the source, not just rubbing where it hurts.
What a Trigger Point Session Feels Like
Trigger point massage therapy uses focused, sustained pressure on a specific point until the muscle begins to release. It is a precise form of massage therapy. Rather than covering large areas, your therapist works point by point through the soft tissues that are driving your symptoms.
Pressure is always adjusted to you. We take a holistic approach focused on your overall comfort and nervous system support, paying close attention to each client's nervous system as a point releases. Clear communication runs through the whole session, and your comfort stays a high priority. You can expect targeted, therapeutic bodywork, not a general once-over.
Every session is provided by a licensed massage therapist who draws from a wide range of massage techniques. Trigger point work is often combined with myofascial release therapy, which addresses the connective tissue around the muscle.
Signs Trigger Point Massage May Help
Clients often book trigger point massage for:
A knot that returns in the same spot
Pain that travels, such as neck tightness tied to the upper back
Chronic tension and chronic pain
Back pain and shoulder issues
Stiffness that limits range of motion or freedom of movement
Injury recovery, once you are ready for focused work
Tell your therapist what you are feeling, and your session will be built around your specific needs, individual needs, and unique needs. For many clients, trigger point work becomes an important tool in their healing process and a way to keep pain from shaping their everyday lives.
For athletes and active individuals, trigger point work pairs well with our Bellingham sports massage, helping you maintain top condition and stay at the top of your game. Less time sidelined means more of your free time goes to the activities you love, instead of spending time working around a knot.

Trigger Point, Deep Tissue, or Full Body?
Each has its own page:
Trigger point targets specific knots and the pain they refer elsewhere. That's this page.
Deep tissue massage uses deep tissue work to reach the deeper layers of muscles across the areas that need it. See Bellingham deep tissue massage.
Full body massage covers your whole body in a single session. See Bellingham full body massage.
If you want lighter pressure, a Swedish massage, relaxation massage, hot stone massage, or prenatal massage session may suit you better. See our Bellingham massage therapy page for every session type, and Bellingham medical massage for injury-focused care with HSA and SuperBill details.
Beyond the Massage Table
Because Prime is a sports medicine clinic, your trigger point work can connect to the rest of your care under one roof:
Physical therapy. Physical therapy services at Prime are provided by Precision PT. One of their physical therapist team is a Certified Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy therapist who performs dry needling. See our Physical Therapy page.
Recovery. Our training room includes a Compex unit, which is designed to help increase blood flow to fatigued muscles, along with NormaTec compression, contrast tubs, and more.
Choosing Your Session Length
90 Minute Massage: May include an orthopedic and musculoskeletal evaluation with measurements, allowing more detailed techniques for your primary complaints and compensations. Your practitioner takes extra time to recommend self-care strategies and build a more thorough, customized treatment plan for recovery.
60 Minute Massage: Lets your practitioner address both primary and secondary complaints.
30 Minute Massage: A focused option when you cannot wait and need to treat an acute injury, or when you want to target a single trigger point area.
Whether it's your first massage or one of many regular massage sessions and treatment sessions, we'll help you choose the right length.
