What Makes Bellingham Massage Therapy Different for Athletes and Active Adults
Prime Sports Institute in downtown Bellingham isn't a day spa. It's a sports medicine clinic, and the massage therapy we offer reflects that difference in every session we deliver. For athletes and active adults in Whatcom County who need more than relaxation, Prime offers Bellingham massage therapy that is built for performance, recovery, and results.
Here's what makes it different, and why it matters for how you train, recover, and feel.
A Sports Medicine Context, Not a Spa Setting
Most massage businesses in Bellingham are designed around relaxation. That's valuable, and we respect it. But the needs of an athlete recovering from a hard training week, a runner managing IT band tension, a cyclist dealing with hip flexor tightness, or a CrossFit athlete working through accumulated soreness are different from the needs of someone unwinding after a stressful week.
Prime is a sports medicine clinic conveniently located in downtown Bellingham that provides athletic therapy to optimize performance, prevent injury, and enable recovery. Our massage team works alongside athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, physical therapists, a nutritionist, and coaches, all under one roof.
That clinical context shapes how our massage therapists approach each session. They're not working in isolation. They're part of an integrated team, and the care they provide reflects that.
Sports Massage Focused on Performance and Recovery
Our sports massage focuses on myofascial release in deeper layers of muscles to enhance performance and speed recovery. Whether you're preparing for outdoor recreation or recovering from a strenuous workout, our skilled massage practitioners customize each session to meet your unique needs.
This therapeutic approach is meaningfully different from a standard relaxation massage. The pressure is deeper, the technique is more targeted, and the goals are specific: improve range of motion, reduce muscle tension, accelerate recovery, and support the kind of consistent training that produces real athletic progress.

Our Bellingham Massage Therapists Understand Athletes
The people delivering your massage at Prime are not generalists. Each therapist brings specific training, athletic backgrounds, and clinical expertise that directly shapes how they work with athletes and active adults.
Seth Lee
Seth graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sports Science. He draws from his background as a student athlete to bring a strong understanding of human movement, injury recovery, and performance optimization to his massage practice. He integrates Myofascial Release, Sports Massage, Pin and Stretch, Muscle Energy Techniques, and Swedish Massage to support mobility, reduce pain, and help clients return to and maintain their active lifestyles. His approach emphasizes restoring balance, improving ease of movement, and preventing future injury.
Thom Mooney
Thom is a graduate of Whatcom Community College's Massage Therapy Program and is proficient in Swedish, deep tissue, cupping, myofascial release, neuromuscular techniques, and trigger point therapy. His personal background includes action and adrenaline sports, cycling, baseball, disc golf, wrestling, and he is broadening his knowledge in martial arts, boxing, grappling, and MMA. Thom is passionate about helping clients achieve optimal health through activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation, a reduction in stress and anxiety, and an increased feeling of overall well-being.
Amanda Cook
Amanda is a graduate of WCC's Massage Therapy Program and an active runner, hiker, and bicyclist who knows firsthand how difficult it is when an injury prevents you from doing what you love. Her goal is to help you recover, get you back to doing what you enjoy, and keep you in prime condition. She is certified in intraoral massage and offers this service, which can help with headaches, tension, and migraines.
Kristina Zographos
Kristina has been practicing massage since 2012. Her aim is to encourage cohesion within the musculoskeletal system so you walk out of your massage appointment feeling better than when you walked in. Her work produces an improved range of motion, a reduction in chronic or acute pain and muscle stiffness, a decrease in stress levels, and a quicker bounce-back after a particularly grueling training session.
Kerry Gustafson
Kerry approaches each session as treatment and medical massage rather than a traditional spa experience. Her goal is to get to the root of the problem and leave clients with results they'll continue to feel over the next several days.

Trusted by High-Performance Athletes
Prime Sports Institute's reputation for sports-focused massage isn't built on marketing. It's built on results. Recently, Prime had the honor of supporting the Harlem Globetrotters during their 100th Anniversary Tour. On their off day, 25 athletes and coaches received sports-focused massage therapy and pain relief massage, targeting fatigue, tight muscles, and travel strain. As one athlete shared: "I wish we could package up Prime and take you all along with us on the road."
The same expertise and care our team brought to those sessions is what every client receives. Whether you're training for a local trail race, managing chronic tension from desk work and weekend athletics, or recovering from a competitive season, Prime brings professional-level sports massage to your care plan.
An Integrated Recovery Approach
One of the most meaningful things Prime offers that most Bellingham massage places cannot is integration. If your massage reveals a mobility limitation that would benefit from guidance, our team includes coaches and athletic trainers who can address it. If you want to pair your session with guided recovery using NormaTec compression, contrast tubs, cold laser, GameReady, or FAR infrared sauna, our Training Room is available for exactly that.
According to the National Institutes of Health, massage therapy has demonstrated measurable benefits for reducing delayed onset muscle soreness, improving range of motion, and supporting athletic recovery when applied consistently. At Prime, you get those evidence-backed benefits within a clinic designed to support the full picture of athletic health.

Session Lengths Built Around Your Needs
Prime offers massage sessions in three formats:
A 90-minute session may include orthopedic and musculoskeletal evaluation and measurements, allowing for more detailed massage techniques to address your primary complaints and compensations. Your practitioner will take extra time to recommend self-care strategies and provide a more thorough and customized plan for recovery.
A 60-minute session allows your massage practitioner to address both primary and secondary complaints. Also great for a full-body massage experience.
A 30-minute session is a fantastic option if you need to get in for an abbreviated appointment to treat an acute injury.
Prime accepts HSA cards and can provide a SuperBill for out-of-network insurance submission.
